How does nuclear Energy Affect the Environment?
Nuclear energy has been proposed as a solution to the requirement for a sustainable energy source that does not produce CO2. Nuclear power is not a renewable energy source by definition. The environmental implications of nuclear energy raise important concerns that must be addressed, particularly before any further nuclear power facilities are built.Carbon Dioxide:
Because nuclear power plants do not emit carbon dioxide, it has been dubbed a "clean" form of energy. While this is correct, it is also misleading. Although nuclear power plants do not emit carbon dioxide while in operation, large amounts of carbon dioxide are released during the construction and operation of the plants. Uranium is used as a fuel in nuclear power reactors. Uranium mining emits a significant amount of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. When new nuclear power facilities are created, carbon dioxide is also emitted into the atmosphere. Finally, the transportation of radioactive waste emits carbon dioxide.
Radiation at low levels:
Nuclear power stations emit modest levels of radiation into the environment on a regular basis. The effects of persistent low doses of radiation are a source of disagreement among scientists. Several studies have found that persons who live near nuclear power facilities have a higher cancer rate. DNA damage has been linked to long-term low-level radiation exposure. The extent of the harm produced by low amounts of radiation to wildlife, vegetation, and the ozone layer is not fully recognised. The magnitude of the impacts induced by low amounts of radiation in the atmosphere is being investigated further.
Waste radioactive:
The dangers of radioactive waste are enormous. The waste from nuclear power facilities can last for hundreds of thousands of years. Currently, the power station houses a significant amount of radioactive waste from nuclear power plants. Nuclear waste would certainly have to be transferred due to space constraints. The radioactive waste is expected to be buried in barrels in Nevada's Yucca Mountains.
