Use of Articles - A, An, The | CBSE Class 2 English  An article is a word used to customize a noun, which is a place, person, object, or idea. Technically, an article is an adjective.  Generally, adjectives customize nouns through description, but articles are used to refer or point out to nouns. There are two different types of articles: definite and indefinite articles. ‘A’  and  ‘An’  are Indefinite articles and ‘The’ is Definite articles. ‘A’  is used before common nouns which are in singular number, and which begin with a consonant sound. Example – a book, a tree, a cow, a school, etc. ‘AN’  is used before common nouns which are in singular number, and which begin with a vowel sound.  A, e, I, o,  and  u  are vowels. Example – an elephant, an airplane, an umbrella, an orange, an ink-pot, etc. Note: the words ‘hour’ and ‘honest’ begin with the consonant ‘h’, but the ‘h’ is silent. Therefore, we use ‘an’ before them – ‘an honest boy’, ‘an hour’. The definite article
