Blood - Important Points & Functions

BLOOD: Important Points & Functions that you must read for upcoming competitive exams to exaggerate your Competitive Exams Preparation.
Blood is a fluid connective tissue that helps in transporting oxygen and other essential nutrients to the cells and also helps carry away waste material and carbon dioxide.

The quantity of blood in the human body is 7% of the total weight.
And the pH value of blood is 7.4.

· Blood can be categorized as both tissue and fluid. It acts as a tissue
because it is an assimilation of specialized cells that help in carrying out a
specific function. These cells are suspended in a liquid matrix (plasma),
which makes the blood fluid.

· Blood is red in color due to a red pigment called hemoglobin present in its
red blood cells.

· Blood has four components, which are:
1 Plasma
2 Red blood cells
3 White blood cells
4 Platelets

· Plasma is the liquid portion of the blood and contains more than 90%
water. Water gets easily exchanged with blood cells and is carried out to
the various organs. The major plasma protein is serum albumin, which
helps in maintaining the volume of the plasma.

· There are four major types of blood cells: red blood cells (erythrocytes),
platelets (thrombocytes), lymphocytes, and phagocytic cells. Collectively,
the lymphocytes and phagocytic cells constitute the white blood cells
(leukocytes).

·        FUNCTIONS OF BLOOD:

1 Blood regulates body temperature.
2 It carries oxygen from the lungs to different parts of the body and
carries carbon dioxide from the body cells to the lungs for breathing
out.
3 It carries digested food from the small intestine to all parts of the
body.
4 It carries hormones from the endocrine glands to different organs of
the body.
5 It carries waste product urea from the liver to the kidneys for
excretion.
6 Blood (especially White blood cells) defends against infection.
