What is gypsum?

Gypsum is a widely used mineral. Its chemical name is calcium sulfate dihydrate (CaSO4.2H2O), and it was discovered in saltwater underwater layers millions of years ago. The minerals were released when the water evaporated. This Topic Covers the Class 10 Chemistry

Where are gypsum found?

Gypsum rock is found worldwide and deposits extend from Baja, Mexico, across Utah, and from southwest Texas to the Niagara River in New York State in North America. Nova Scotia is home to the largest gypsum quarry in the world and is owned by National Gypsum.

 

Gypsum Uses

Gypsum is used for the renovation and construction of all types of residential and non-residential buildings. It can be used for very beautiful, contemporary designs and structures, as well as simple everyday objects and processes.


It helps in preventing cracks by acting as wadding in gypsum wallboard combined compound. It is mostly used for this process. It is also used in the manufacture of Plaster of Paris, ornamental purpose, and more.


Gypsum uses include wallboard, cement, plaster of Paris, soil conditioning, and hardening of Portland cement. The varieties of gypsum are known as “satin spar” and “alabaster” for a variety of ornamental purposes; however, their low hardness limits their durability.

Plasterboard

Plasterboard is used for the partitioning and lining of walls, ceilings, ceilings, and floors. Gypsum is an important component of modern plasterboard.

 

Gypsum fiberboard

Gypsum fiberboard is used for partitions, walls, ceilings, ceilings, and floors. Standard gypsum fiberboard is soundproof, as well as good for impact and moisture resistance.

 

Decorative plaster

This gypsum plaster is known as the Plaster of Paris, which artisans have been using for thousands of years to make decorative moldings and models. Plaster of Paris is now found worldwide but derives its name from a large gypsum deposit at Montmartre, Paris. Gypsum plaster from Mont mare to Rome was mined, and the mine was used in the mid-19th century.
