Use of Articles - A, An, The | CBSE Class 2 English

An article is a word used to customize a noun, which is a place, person, object, or idea. Technically, an article is an adjective.  Generally, adjectives customize nouns through description, but articles are used to refer or point out to nouns. There are two different types of articles: definite and indefinite articles.
‘A’ and ‘An’ are Indefinite articles and ‘The’ is Definite articles.
‘A’ is used before common nouns which are in singular number, and which begin with a consonant sound. Example – a book, a tree, a cow, a school, etc.
‘AN’ is used before common nouns which are in singular number, and which begin with a vowel sound. A, e, I, o, and u are vowels. Example – an elephant, an airplane, an umbrella, an orange, an ink-pot, etc.
Note: the words ‘hour’ and ‘honest’ begin with the consonant ‘h’, but the ‘h’ is silent. Therefore, we use ‘an’ before them – ‘an honest boy’, ‘an hour’.
The definite article ‘the’ is used in the following cases.
  1. When a singular noun represents a whole class.
The camel is a beast of burden. (Here the singular noun ‘camel’ is used to refer to all the camels.)
Note: when a plural noun is used to talk about things in general, articles are usually omitted.
Example: Camels are beasts of burden, Computers are costly.

After independence, the Government of India set a goal to give an ideal form to the mother tongue of the country and set a target for grammar and orthography using the Devanagari script to bring standardization in writing. Subsequently, on September 14, 1949, the Constituent Assembly decided by a vote that Hindi would be the official language of India. To propagate the importance of this decision and to spread Hindi in every region, India is celebrating Hindi Day every year from 1953 to 14 September, at the request of Rashtrabhasha Prachar Samiti, Wardha. Apart from this, 14 September is also the birthday of Rajendra Singh, who worked tirelessly to make Hindi the official language of India. Hindi Day is observed every year on 14 September to mark the importance of the Hindi language in the country. The Hindi language is one of the oldest languages, which derives most of its academic vocabulary from the Sanskrit language written in the Deva
