Banking Awareness – Merger of Bank of Baroda , Dena Bank, and Vijaya Bank
Banking classes online : The Indian government proposed the merger of three public sector lenders – Bank of Baroda, Dena Bank and Vijaya Bank after a meeting of the ‘alternative mechanism’ set up last year to consider consolidation in the banking sector. Due to a large number of government banking entities, it has been long felt that the Indian banking sector needs consolidation. At present, there are 21 government-owned banks. This number will reduce to 19 posts the merger.
Dena Bank and Vijaya Bank are more regionally focused as compared to Bank of Baroda already having a widespread network.
The decision of merger has been taken in a way that will ensure that the combined bank will not end up being weaker than the individual entities. There will be no adverse impact on employees and customers of the individual banks on account of the proposed merger.
