What is Seed Dispersal and Types? Ecological Services Class 12 Biology

In this article, we will study What is Seed Dispersal? and types of seed Dispersal from Ecological Services Class 12 Biology.
A seed is a part of the plant that bears a baby plant inside it. The hard structure of the seed acts as a protective outer covering for the embryonic/baby plant enclosed in it. The formation of the seed is a part of the process of reproduction in flowering plants.
Seeds grow into new plants, but if the seeds just fall to the ground near the parent plant, then there would be increased demands for sunlight, water, and nutrients within the limited area. As a result, all the seeds, as well as the parent plants, might not get enough sunlight, water or nutrients from the soil. Consequently, this will inhibit the proper growth of the parent plants as well as the seeds from which the baby plant will come out.
Plants cannot walk around to take their seeds to other places so, they have developed other methods so that their seeds are taken away at distant places. The various means that carry the seeds far off places from the parent plants are wind, water, animals, explosion and fire.
Plant regeneration is essential for maintaining forest biodiversity and the functioning of the ecosystem. Therefore, seed dispersal is an essential ecological service.
