Class 10 Modals

What are Modal Auxiliaries?

  • These are verbs which are used with main verbs like can, must, could, would, etc.
  • These verbs are used to express ideas like a possibility, permission, necessity, obligation, etc.
  • Modal verbs have only one form.
  • These verbs don’t add‘s’ or ‘es’ to the third person singular form.
  • Modal verbs are followed by the infinite of another verb without ‘to’
  • The verbs in question are used without doing or do or did in the past.
  • The negative sentence is formed by using the word ‘not’.

 

Different modal verbs

1. Must and have to

  • It is used for all persons in the present and the future tenses.
  • The negative sentence use must not or mustn’t.
  • Must have no infinite or past tense.
